How it works

Though it is called a robot, the da Vinci® Surgical System cannot act on its own. Our skilled surgeons control every movement. Robotic-assisted surgery provides surgeons with enhanced capabilities, including high-definition 3-D vision and a magnified view thanks to a small camera inserted into the body through a minor incision. The surgeon has control over the robotic system, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments that enter the body through other minor incisions. The instruments mimic—and, at times, exceed—the complex movements of the human hand and wrist.

Prostatectomy using the da Vinci: In prostate cancer treatment, millimeters matter. Nerve fibers and blood vessels are attached to the prostate gland. To spare these nerves, they must be delicately and precisely separated from the prostate before its removal. Medcenter One surgeons use the precision, vision and control provided by da Vinci to assist them in removal of the cancerous prostate while preserving important nerves and blood vessels. Other concerns for prostate cancer patients are urinary continence and sexual function after treatment. Studies show patients who undergo a robotic-assisted prostatectomy may experience a faster return of urinary continence following surgery and lower rates of urinary pain than radiation (brachytherapy) patients.   This example compares a traditional prostatectomy removal incision with the da Vinci procedure. Several studies also show that patients who are potent prior to surgery have experienced a high level of recovery of sexual function within a year following da Vinci surgery. Talk to your surgeon about reasonable expectations for recovery of sexual function and a rehabilitation program that may include exercises and drug therapy.
