![]() By completing Medcenter One’s Oneweigh program, Lenny Hueske learned to make better food choices, improved his exercise routine and lost 120 pounds. His wife, Mary, lost 50 pounds by simply changing the way she prepares the couple’s meals. |
Lenny Hueske said he has found “The Way” to lose
weight. It’s through Oneweigh, Medcenter One’s
six-month, personalized weight management program for adults. Hueske, who unsuccessfully battled the upward creep for years, has lost 120 pounds since signing up for Oneweigh. He drove 85 miles from his home in Richardton to Bismarck weekly the first three months and then monthly for the last three months. At home, he recorded in a daily journal everything he put in his mouth, measuring it first to be sure his portion control was accurate and adding up daily calories. He also exercised daily. Hueske says his personal investment was well worth the time, and staying with the program has become part of his daily routine. “It’s pretty gratifying,” Hueske said. “There are people that don’t even recognize me anymore. That feels real good. The thing I’m happiest about is that I was on blood pressure medicine, and my doctor said I was on the verge of diabetes and my liver was |

spends a lot of time getting in and out of large
equipment and doing manual labor. He was
constantly winded and tired all the time. He’s since
regained his agility and flexibility. His wife, Mary, has
lost more than 50 pounds simply from changing the
way she cooks and eating meals with her husband.
The professional expertise offered to Oneweigh participants sets the program in a class by itself when it comes to weight management. Every participant receives individualized counseling with a registered dietitian and a personal trainer, said Amy Davis, program coordinator and a licensed, registered dietitian. She said the program is designed to empower participants to take control of their health and weight. Having direct access to nutrition and fitness experts ensures that participants receive evidence-based, reliable information. |

“The classes really helped me figure out what I was eating and how much and what food groups I needed,” Hueske said. “Then we’d go back for group discussions and see what was working for us. The dietitian would look over our papers for the week and help us do it right. It helped to hear what kind of problems other people were having and how to stay away from them.”
Portion control, keeping food diaries and increasing physical activity are
important for weight management success, Davis said, but equally important
is developing a healthy lifestyle that continues when they’ve lost
the weight.
“We want this to be the last weight-loss program they participate in,” she said. “We spend a lot of time addressing the challenges of weight management and how to overcome them.”
With the lifestyle changes he has made and the management tools he learned in Oneweigh, Hueske is committed to continuing his new lifestyle even though he is no longer in Oneweigh. Every evening he still records his food intake and total calories. When he has eaten more than he intended, he cuts back the next day. He also exercises once or twice daily on the treadmill and exercise bike in his home.
“Now when I think about cheating or eating bigger portions than I should, I realize I’m just cheating myself if I do,” he said.
