For patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD), the simple act of walking can become exceedingly painful because of blockages in the arteries of the legs. Now patients at Medcenter One have a new non-surgical alternative for treatment of these blockages, an FDA-approved device called the SilverHawk™ Plaque Excision System. The device uses a tiny rotating blade to shave away sections of plaque that have built up on the artery wall. Unlike other solutions for plaque buildup—like angioplasty and stenting—the plaque is not just pushed to the sides where it can re-grow and re-block the artery. Instead, the SilverHawk tool collects the plaque and removes it.
