Rheumatology

Rheumatology disorders range in severity from minor aches and pains affecting the joints and related structures such as osteoporosis, to serious and potentially life-threatening conditions, such as complicated rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and other connective tissue diseases.

Rheumatologists are internists who have had further training in the care of people of all ages with arthritis and related disorders. They work closely with other internal medicine specialists, general practitioners, physiatrists, physical and occupational therapists and psychiatrists.

Research

Medcenter One’s Dr. Lynne Peterson is actively involved in national rheumatology research projects. Her main research focus is in rheumatoid arthritis, where she is working to identify the cause of this disease, risk factors for developing this disease, and most effective treatment options. She also is involved in research in juvenile idiopathic arthritis, osteoporosis, and osteoarthritis. Dr. Peterson has been named “Clinical Researcher of the Year” for the Rheumatoid Arthritis Investigational Network (RAIN) on multiple occasions.
