Medcenter One H1N1 vaccine update

Medcenter One is now accepting appointment requests for anyone who wishes to be immunized against H1N1 influenza. Please note: vaccine supply is limited and availability may change from day to day.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the following groups of people complete the vaccine:
  • Pregnant women because they are at higher risk of complications and can potentially provide protection to infants who cannot be vaccinated.
  • Household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age because infants are at high risk of influenza-related complications and cannot be vaccinated. Vaccinating caregivers helps protect infants by cocooning them from the virus.
  • All people ages 6 months through 24 years because this age group has experienced several cases of H1N1 influenza; additionally, school-aged children and college students are in close contact with each other, which increases the likelihood of disease spread.
  • People ages 25—64 who have health conditions associated with higher risk of medical complications from influenza.

What you should know and do this flu season if you are 65 or older

When it comes to H1N1 influenza (Swine Flu), it seems the older you are, the more resistance you have to the virus. In fact, people age 65 and older are the group least likely to get infected with this flu virus and so are listed as low priority for H1N1 vaccinations. Seasonal flu vaccine

With increased demand for flu vaccine this year, Medcenter One's supply of seasonal flu vaccine is depleted in all clinics with the exception of the Q&R clinic pediatric department (Q&R Clinic—3rd floor). The pediatric department is offering FluMist for children ages 2 and older who do not have asthma or other long-term health problems.
