Contributing to the communities we serve

As a non-profit healthcare system, Medcenter One is committed to providing programs and services to improve quality of life for people in the communities it serves.

Community care

One of the pillars of a non-profit health organization is to provide medical care regardless of a patient's ability to pay. In 2011, Medcenter One's charity care totaled $12.8 million. For more on Medcenter One's community care program, click here.

Health education

Each month, Medcenter One offers education classes and support groups, ranging from breast feeding and infant massage for new parents to driver's safety for senior-aged adults and support groups for chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Medcenter One also hosts Doc Talk, a free monthly doctor—led presentation series that is open to the public.

Health professionals' education

In addition to the College of Nursing, Medcenter One provides learning environments and financial support for programs such as the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Bismarck State College's laboratory tech program to ensure a strong, local healthcare work force in the future.

Subsidized health services

Medcenter One subsidizes health services to ensure the community receives specialized care in a variety of important areas. An example of this care is Medcenter One's Dakota Children's Advocacy Center, a program designed to improve the response to child abuse by providing a communitywide multidisciplinary team approach. In 2011, the center provided medical and mental health services to 346 children and provided training and teaching to 2,108 children.

Identifing and fulfilling special needs

The Medcenter One Foundation coordinates fundraising activities throughout the year to help families with special needs. The Medcenter One Great American Bike Race, for example, a fundraiser for children who have cerebral palsy or a related disability, has raised more than $1.5 million to help families pay for care and equipment that health insurance does not cover.

The Foundation also fundraises for specific adult needs. The breast-specific gamma imagine (BSGI) fund, for example, helps pay for BSGI testing for women who need financial assistance for this potentially life-saving test.

Research

As a research institution, Medcenter One is committed to seeking new treatment and preventative measures. Medcenter One contracts with a local research organization and works with the North Central Cancer Treatment Group.

Emergency planning and training

Medcenter One actively participates in local, regional and statewide emergency planning activities, providing beyond what is required for licensure. Medcenter One allows the Bismarck Police and Burleigh County Sherriff's departments to use the Medcenter One security training site and equipment for their training purposes.
