As a non-profit healthcare organization, Medcenter One provides medical care regardless of the patient's ability to pay. In 2009, this charity care totaled $5.98 million. When combined with the various education programs and services Medcenter One provides free of charge or at a loss, Medcenter One's total contributions to the communities it serves is more than $14 million. Those programs include the following: Health education classes
Each month, Medcenter One offers dozens of education classes and support groups, including:
Health screeningsMedcenter One provides free hearing, sports injury, blood pressure, prostate, vein and diabetes screenings.
Health promotional programs
Medcenter One health promotion programs include Doc Talk, free monthly doctor-led presentations open to the public that focus on specific areas of healthcare important to the region.
Health professionals' education
Medcenter One has owned and financially supported its own College of Nursing since 1908. Forty-four students will graduate from Medcenter One College of Nursing in May 2010.
In addition, Medcenter One provides learning environments and financial support for programs such as the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Bismarck State College's laboratory tech program to ensure a strong, local healthcare workforce in the future.
A majority of the students trained in Bismarck—Mandan will stay in the area to work. With healthcare workforce challenges across the country, active involvement in teaching and training the next generation of healthcare professionals is the only way to maintain the quantity and quality workforce needed to serve the aging population in our state. Subsidized health services
Medcenter One subsidizes health services to ensure the community receives important specialized care services. An example of this care is Medcenter One's Dakota Children's Advocacy Center, a multidisciplinary team approach to investigating child abuse. In 2009, the center helped 278 victims and their families from 35 different North Dakota counties.
Research
As a research institution, Medcenter One is committed to seeking new treatment and preventative measures. Medcenter One contracts with a local research organization and works with the North Central Cancer Treatment Group.
Emergency planning and training
Medcenter One actively participates in local, regional and statewide emergency planning activities, providing beyond what is required for licensure. Medcenter One allows the Bismarck Police and Burleigh County Sherriff's departments to use the Medcenter One security training site and equipment for their training purposes.
