Anticoagulation clinic

Medcenter One’s anticoagulation clinic was created to provide safe and convenient follow-up care for patients who take Coumadin, a blood-thinning medication often prescribed to reduce a patient’s risk for heart attacks, strokes and blood clots.

Expertly trained medical staff help patients receive the education and monitoring necessary to get the best results from this important medication and to decrease potential side effects.

• How Coumadin works and possible side effects
• Signs and symptoms of bleeding or blood clots
• Which medications, herbal products and vitamins may interact and/or interfere with Coumadin
• Which foods may interact with Coumadin
• Instructions for dose changes when necessary
• Suggested exercise and lifestyle changes

The anticoagulation clinic uses a computer software database specially developed just for the management of Coumadin therapy, to record and monitor your response to the medication, maximizing each patient’s quality of care.

Liposorber treatment

For some people, even diet and prescription medications cannot effectively lower dangerously high levels of LKL, also known as LDL aphenessis (aphexesis) or bad, cholesterol. These patients now have a new option called Liposorber treatment. Medcenter One is the only facility in North Dakota offering this advanced technology.

The Liposorber system works by removing the bad cholesterol from the blood. The procedure is similar to kidney dialysis. A needle is inserted into the patient's arm. The blood then flows through the Liposorber system, where the bad choesterol is removed. The blood, which now contains only good cholesterol, is returned to the patient through a second needle site. The process takes two to three hours.

A patient's LDL cholesterol level can be lowered by 73 to 83 percent after a single treatment. The Liposorber procedure is not a cure. Patients must continue to have treatments either every week or every other week for the rest of their lives to maintain the lowered cholesterol level.
