About Medcenter One:
Amber's Dream
Picturing the dream—good things happen when we believe
Never Say Never Land and Meddy Bear’s Night Sky
| Children and their parents are often terrified when hospitalization is necessary. Amber understood that and so do the professionals at Medcenter One. Who better to transform their feelings of fear into hope than Meddy Bear?
Children admitted to the Medcenter One Children’s Hospital will be greeted by a life-sized resin Meddy Bear. He will welcome the children to the unit and introduce them to Never Say Never Land via a large wall map. The stage will be set for an adventure of hope. |
|
 |
Adjacent to Never Say Never Land and the Endless Hallway of Hope will be Meddy Bear’s Night Sky where families can honor the cherished children in their lives by purchasing an engraved star or comet. The tunnel of fiber optics wraps from the north wall across the ceiling and back down the south wall creating a place of honor for these special children.

Children’s Cancer Care
| Amber’s Dream will create a separate cancer unit within the Children’s Hospital for high-risk pediatric oncology patients. The unit will feature a HEPA filtration system designed to remove 99.97 percent of airborne particles. This system will protect pediatric oncology patients from contaminated air that may seriously compromise their already weakened immune systems and, therefore, their ability to regain their health.
The larger patient rooms planned for the children’s cancer care unit will feature family-friendly accommodations including a desk area with computer access and internet availability, a small refrigerator, and comfortable hide-a-beds for parents who choose to stay overnight during the course of their child’s treatments. |
|
 |
Finally, each room will feature a whirlpool tub. Warm, moving water has been proven most effective in soothing the muscular or skeletal pain often associated with chemotherapy or radiation treatments.

Patient rooms

|
Understanding that families, especially children, are often most relaxed when in their home setting, the patient rooms will replicate a child’s home bedroom. Patterned fleece blankets will be folded across the foot of the bed and colorful pillows will form a nesting place for the Meddy Bear given to each patient upon his or her arrival. Fiber optic window valances will provide soft, twinkling lighting while character clocks and imaginative artwork will captivate each patient’s attention. A soft glowing lantern will be placed on the wall outside each patient’s room. During the darkest hours of the night when the patients are sleeping, Meddy Bear will leave a hand-written message inside the lantern to be retrieved and answered by the patient the next day. |

Under the Sea Explorations Treatment Room
| When children have to endure painful procedures, it can be terrifying. Understanding that fear often adds to pain, the Under the Sea Explorations Treatment Room will serve to distract children by capturing their imagination. This room will provide the illusion of being suspended in and surrounded by water. An aquarium filled with colorful fish will be on the wall beside the bed and a flat screen TV with a DVD player will be mounted on the ceiling above the bed. Bubble glass will replace the traditional clear glass of the room’s storage cabinets. |

Imagination Island Retreat
The Imagination Island Retreat will serve, also, as the Parent Resource Center. Here, families can access medical information by using one of two computers with internet access located adjacent to open shelving units where resource materials on a variety of childhood diseases and disorders will be available for reading. Parents can visit with other family members in cozy conversational groupings of furniture that will include club chairs, ottomans and benches, each of which can be easily moved to accommodate families of all sizes. A small refrigerator, coffee-maker, toaster and microwave will be available for use by family members unable to leave the unit and visit the cafeteria.

With Hope Anything Is Possible Family Respite Room
Children hospitalized within a standard pediatric room are most often comforted by the overnight presence of their families. However, when a child is placed in intensive care, their families are unable to stay overnight with them. These families cannot fathom leaving the hospital for even an hour much less overnight. They need a quiet place to close their eyes for a few moments, take a much-needed shower or grab a quick bite to eat. The With Hope Anything is Possible Family Respite Room, located just down the hall from the intensive care unit, will provide warm, comforting overnight accommodations for these families.

Additional features
These include large, colorful murals painted exclusively for our Children’s Hospital through the creative endeavors of internationally acclaimed local artist Ric Sprynczynatyk, a playroom redecorated to resemble a child’s bedroom with nightscape mural created by local artist Leon Basler and two pirate ship nurses stations, one of which will feature a Meddy Bear dressed as a pirate ready to conquer any illness or injury.
Additionally, the hallways of our Children’s Hospital will incorporate new wall coverings with inspirational messages of hope.
