The Great American Bike Race (GABR) is an annual fundraising event created to help patients with cerebral palsy and related disabilities and their families purchase adaptive equipment and services.
A family who has a child with even a mild form of cerebral palsy has many expenses above and beyond what their insurance will cover. In 2008, GABR donations funded:
- $39,547 for therapy services
- $38,202 for orthotics and equipment
- $12,000 for travel reimbursement
- $39,719 for wheelchairs and accessories
- $61,312 for home and vehicle adaptations
In total, 133 requests for funds were granted by the GABR disbursement committee totaling more than $200,000. GABR funds are now available to families in 37 North Dakota counties.
